One-Off Website or Ongoing Development? How to Think About It
Back to Blog
A website is closer to a vehicle than a brochure. It needs servicing, it wears, the road changes, and its purpose shifts as the business does. The question isn't whether it needs care. It's how much, and in what arrangement.
One-off works when
- The site is simple, on a stable platform, and changes rarely
- You can handle small content updates yourself
- You're comfortable paying for fixes as they arise
Ongoing makes sense when
- The site takes bookings, payments or handles customer data, so downtime or bugs have real cost
- It's central to lead generation and you're actively improving it
- The platform needs regular security and dependency updates
- You want steady improvement rather than a big rebuild every few years
What it shouldn't be
Ongoing shouldn't mean an opaque monthly fee for unspecified 'support'. You should know what's covered: updates, monitoring, backups, fixes, a set amount of change. If a retainer isn't warranted, a pay-as-needed arrangement is often better, and we'll say so. See website maintenance for how we scope this, and how we quote.
