Core Web Vitals for Business Owners: What the Numbers Mean and What to Do

Back to Blog

Core Web Vitals are Google's way of measuring how a page feels to a real visitor. They're a useful yardstick, but they're often sold as a magic ranking lever. They aren't. They're one part of page experience, and Google has said that relevance and content quality matter more.

The three measures

MetricWhat it measuresGoogle's 'good' threshold
LCP: Largest Contentful PaintHow quickly the main content appears2.5 seconds or less
INP: Interaction to Next PaintHow quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks200 milliseconds or less
CLS: Cumulative Layout ShiftHow much the layout jumps while loading0.1 or less

Google assesses these at the 75th percentile of real visits, separately for mobile and desktop. That matters: a page can look fine on your laptop and fail for phone users on mobile data.

Where sites usually lose time

  • Oversized hero images and images without set dimensions (hurts LCP and CLS)
  • Heavy JavaScript and too many third-party tags: chat widgets, trackers, embeds (hurts INP and LCP)
  • Slow hosting or no caching (hurts everything)
  • Web fonts that load late and shift the text
  • Page builders and plugin stacks that ship code the page never uses

What to do

  1. Check real-user data in Google Search Console's Core Web Vitals report, if your site has enough traffic.
  2. Test a key page on a real phone on mobile data, not only on Wi-Fi.
  3. Fix the biggest cause first. One uncompressed image can cost more than ten small problems combined.
  4. Re-measure, and keep monitoring. Speed regresses as content and scripts accumulate.

If you want a hand, website performance optimisation covers how we diagnose and fix it, with before-and-after measurements. And because speed problems often have maintenance causes, it connects closely to website maintenance.
