Fix Your Tracking Before You Spend Another Dollar on Ads

Back to Blog

Advertising without measurement is an expensive way to find out that money can disappear. It's also extremely common: campaigns running for months on top of tracking that was never tested, reporting 'conversions' nobody can reconcile with the inbox.

Decide what a conversion is

Before any tool, decide which actions matter: a phone call, a form submission, a booking, a purchase. Two or three is enough. Everything else is noise.

What to set up

  • GA4 events for those actions, named clearly
  • Google Search Console connected, so you can see the queries behind organic visits
  • Conversion tracking in each ad platform, fed by those same events
  • Consistent UTM tags so campaigns show up as campaigns
  • Call tracking or click-to-call events if the phone matters to your business
  • Consent handling that matches your obligations, which are changing and worth confirming with a legal adviser

Then test it like a sceptic

  1. Submit your own form and check it appears in GA4 and the ad platform
  2. Click your own ad (or use a test mode) and see what's attributed
  3. Compare the platform's count with the enquiries actually in your inbox or CRM for the same week
  4. Check nothing is counted twice

A conversion you've never tested is an assumption. If the numbers don't match, that's not a minor nuisance. It's the reason budget decisions become guesses.

Then look at the page

Clean tracking will often reveal that traffic isn't the problem: the page is. That's where conversion optimisation comes in. Fix measurement first, then the page, then spend.

You can work out your cost per lead from your own numbers with the calculator on analytics and tracking. If you're already spending and unsure what you're getting, that's the place to start, not a bigger budget.
