How AI Search Changes Local Business Discovery
Local discovery used to be a search box and ten links, then a map with three results. Now a growing number of people simply ask an assistant: who's a good electrician near Strathpine, which clinic should I book, what's the difference between these two options?
What changes
- The answer, not the list. Assistants summarise, compare and recommend. Being one of ten links matters less than being a source they can describe accurately.
- Conversation replaces keywords. People ask longer, more specific questions and follow up.
- Facts matter more. If your details differ between sources, a system has to guess.
- Specific beats generic. First-party detail (how you work, what's included, where you operate) is what's worth citing.
What hasn't changed
Google's guidance for its AI features is consistent with the old advice: helpful original content, crawlable pages, good page experience, and business information kept accurate through your Business Profile. No special markup is required, and nobody can promise a mention.
What to do
Make the business easy to understand: one clear description repeated consistently, service pages with real detail, a complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews. Then check what assistants say and record it. The full checklist is in what to do about AI search, and the service is AI search visibility.
