Your Website Is Live. Is It Actually Ready for Production?

Back to Blog

A website loading at your address doesn't mean it's ready. 'Live' means visitors can reach it. 'Production-ready' means it will keep working, stay safe and let you find out when it doesn't.

Six questions

  1. Can it be reached reliably? Domain, DNS, hosting, HTTPS and redirects all correct.
  2. Is it secure enough for what it does? Updates current, secrets protected, logins reviewed, sensible access.
  3. Can you recover? Backups exist and you've tested restoring one.
  4. Would you know if it broke? Uptime and error monitoring, and forms that are checked.
  5. Does it work for real people? Tested on phones, with real accounts, and reasonably accessible.
  6. Can it be found and measured? Crawlable, with analytics and conversion tracking verified.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre's guidance for small businesses puts the basics plainly: turn on multi-factor authentication, keep software updated and back up your information. Those three cover more than most sites have.

Is what you've built production-ready?

For websites, stores, prototypes and apps, however they were built. Answer honestly; the gaps show what to look at before real customers arrive. It's a guided self-assessment, not a security audit.

Getting it live

Is your domain registered in your name, and does it point at the live site?
Is it running on proper hosting (not a laptop, a preview link or a temporary address)?
Does it load over HTTPS with no browser warnings, including on www and non-www?
Does email from your domain send and arrive (not land in spam), including form notifications?

Security & stability

Are passwords, API keys and other secrets kept out of the code and public repositories?
If people log in, has authentication been reviewed (password handling, sessions, permissions)?
Are the platform, libraries and plugins current, and is someone responsible for updates?
Are there automatic backups that you've tested restoring?
Would you find out quickly if the site went down or a form stopped working?

Works for real people

Have you tested every form, payment and login end to end on a real phone?
Is it fast and stable on mobile data?
Is it usable with a keyboard, with readable contrast and image descriptions?

Ready to grow

Can search engines crawl it, and does each page have a clear title, description and structure?
Do you track the actions that matter (enquiries, bookings, purchases) and have you tested them?
Do you have a plan for how the first customers will find it?

If the checklist turns up gaps, launch, domains & hosting and website maintenance cover most of them.
