Social Media vs Search: Where Should a Local Business Start?

Back to Blog

Search and social answer different questions. Someone searching 'emergency plumber' already knows what they want. Someone scrolling Instagram hasn't decided anything yet. One captures existing demand; the other helps create it and keeps you familiar when the decision comes.

Start with search when

  • People actively search for what you do (urgent, high-intent or local services)
  • You need to be findable before anything else works
  • Your business is hard to make visually interesting

Start with social when

  • Your product or work is visual or demonstrable (retail, hospitality, trades with before-and-after work)
  • Purchases are driven by discovery rather than search
  • You want to build familiarity and community around a brand

What most businesses need: both, connected

The interesting part isn't choosing one. It's connecting them. Content made for social can answer the questions customers search for. Website pages give social somewhere useful to send people. Tracking shows which posts lead to enquiries, and that decides what to make next. That's the loop we describe on the social media management page: website, search, social, content, leads, data.

A sensible first step

If you have one spare hour a week, put it where your customers already make decisions. For most local service businesses that's a complete Google Business Profile and a decent website, see local SEO. Add social once you can commit to doing it consistently and responding to people.
