SEO vs Paid Advertising: When Each One Makes Sense

Back to Blog

SEO and paid advertising aren't rivals. They're different tools. One builds an asset that compounds slowly; the other buys attention quickly and stops when you stop paying. The mistake is treating either as the answer to every problem.

When SEO comes first

If you have time, people search for what you do, and you want a durable source of enquiries, invest in search. Local businesses in particular can capture high-intent demand through local SEO at a cost that doesn't scale per click.

When paid comes first

If you need enquiries soon, are launching something, or want to test which offer or message works, paid can get data quickly. But only if tracking and the landing page are in place first. Otherwise you pay to learn very little.

The order that usually works

  1. Fix tracking and the landing experience so conversions are measured
  2. Use paid search to capture demand now and learn which queries and messages convert
  3. Put what you learn into SEO and content
  4. Shift the balance as organic grows, keeping paid where it still earns its place

Either way, you need to know what a lead costs. The calculator on our paid advertising page works it out from your own numbers, and analytics and tracking explains how to make those numbers trustworthy.
