The Difference Between Having a Website and Having a Digital Presence
Anyone can have a website, an online store, an Instagram account and a Google Business Profile. Plenty of businesses have all four. The real question is whether they work together to grow the business.
| Having a website | Having a digital presence | |
|---|---|---|
| What exists | A site, built once | A site, profiles, listings, content and tracking that reinforce each other |
| How people arrive | Whoever types your name | Search, local results, social, referrals, ads and AI assistants |
| What happens next | They look around, maybe leave | A clear path to enquire, book or buy, followed up |
| How you learn | Occasionally check the traffic | You know what's producing enquiries and what isn't |
| Who's responsible | Whoever built it, once | Someone owns it as an ongoing system |
The gap
The gap between the two columns is where most businesses live: a good asset with nothing connecting it to growth. That gap is rarely fixed by another website. It's fixed by working out which part of the chain is missing: discovery, understanding, trust, conversion or measurement.
Where to start
Start with the digital gap audit: ten areas, no fake score, and a list of what to investigate first. Or read why your website isn't generating leads for a diagnosis of the most common breaks.
